My neighbour has a large conifer tree and its not getting any smaller, how do I poison it on the quite?

Copper nails – hammered into the trunk (don’t let him see though!) Not particularly quick, but pretty effective.

when I grow an oak tree from an acorn indoors, should I take the shell of the acorn off, or keep it on before I plant it?

Leave it on. In nature the acorn’s outer shell cracks open when it is ready to sprout. Keep the soil moist, not soaking wet, until it sprouts. Oak trees thrive in dry areas, so after it sprouts, let it dry out between waterings.

As a child, I was privileged to eat bread made from acorns. I lived near an oak tree. An old Pomo Native American woman, harvested the acorns and used them for food.

If you ever get the chance, get some acorns and make bread out of them. After removing the outer shell, you have to blanch them in water and throw the water out. She did this twice. ( It is important that you not forget to do this, as the acorns have a poison in them until the poison is removed by the water.) Then dry them in an oven at the lowest temperature, until completely dry. Grind them up fine and use as one would use corn meal. The bread is quite good.

We have just bought a house with a large (>20ft) cherry tree in the rear garden. The tree has good leaf coverage but has been loosing it’s leaves steadily over the summer. The leaves are either green and wrinkled, almost like they have been burnt and over time they go yellow/brown and fall to the ground. I am sure it is diseased but I can’t find anything that points to what type of disease. On the trunk there are various places where sap is leaking and parts of the tree have died. I am very concerned as it is a lovely tree. Any help would be greatfully received.

Your tree sounds like its infected with Bacterial canker. Bacterial canker is a plant disease which has two other names. Bacterial canker in cherry trees is also known as bacterial blast and may be referred to as bacterial gummosis. Although it is a prime and severe attacker of cherry trees, bacterial canker also attacks a wide variety of both fruit and nut trees. This disease, whether called bacterial canker, bacterial gummosis, or bacterial blast in your region is caused by the bacterium pseudomonas syringae. Bacterial canker is active in all phases of the growing season for cherry trees but can be most devastating to young trees which are more susceptible to damage from pseudomonas syringae bacterium.

What does it look like?

The bacterial canker disease first appears as yellow and green leaves discoloring. These leaves then fall off the cherry tree to reveal weakened limbs. Often the cherry tree leaves drop prematurely, but in some regions the leaves may discolor, then brown and wilt. Eventually these leaves will wither and may even remain attached to the cherry tree throughout the winter if they do not drop from the cherry tree in the fall. The bark of the cherry tree has lesions on it which often ooze an amber to yello colored gum from their centers. This oozing of bacterial gum is most common in the seasons of spring, fall and winter.
What can you do about it?

Unfortunately, bacterial canker in cherry trees is incredibly difficult to control. Your best efforts at pruning out cankerous branches can be useless unless you carefully apply alcohol to your pruning sheers to sterilize them with each cut. This action helps to prevent pruning wounds which can easily become reinfected with pseudomonas syringae and other bacterium. Other than removing the affected areas of the cherry tree during the growing season, there are no real control mechanisms. However, once fall hits your region you can spray the cherry tree with a basic copper containing fungicide which will help prevent additional infection and keep your cherry tree healthy. However be sure to prune, off or out, all visible cankerous areas and destroy the debris carefully.

Good luck!

I have a small plum tree in my backyard with very few tiny plums starting to show on it. . . Do birds eat plums? How do I make it more productive?>

Okay, without seeing the tree, or knowing how old it is(and this sounds like a bad pun, but isn’t)have you pruned your plums? All fruit trees need to be pruned correctly to produce. What kind of plum is it? I have a Blackthorn which is also called a sloe plum. It is about 6 1/2 yrs old. Did you just buy it, or did it just come up? That is also a factor. A wild plum will not always grow large fruit. If you bought it that might help to know which kind it is. Some plums are ornamental and won’t have large fruit. Also, an old tree, or a young tree might not bear big plums either. Call a nursery, garden center, or contact www.mobot.org(Missouri Botanical Garden)to get some more information.

A pear tree has been infected by the fungus gymnosporangium sabinae, also known as European pear rust. The leaves all have orange spots. Tried spraying the tree with a liquid fruit tree fungicide but that does not seem to help. What can be done to help the tree over the course of the summer?

Using a liquid copper spray on the tree in the autumn & spring can help prevent the fungus from coming back but it is summer now and the tree needs help.

Fungicides have minimal effectiveness on Gymnosporangium sabinae, or pear trellis rust. Remove any junipers within a mile of the tree, if possible, as they also host the fungus. Pick and discard infected leaves as soon as they appear, and prune any galls that appear at the bases of the twigs. This is all that can be done at this time. Copper spray should be applied in the spring before bud break, especially in warm, wet springs. Consult your county extension office for a treatment schedule for your area. If it helps, this rarely causes appreciable damage to the tree.

I have an overgrown Chinese Elm Tree (Ulmas Parvifolia) and want to provide for its proper care. I need to know how to trim it and when. Thank you for any assistance I can get.

The best time to prune trees in when they are dormant. Branches to prune out are ones that are damaged, diseased or dead (you can do this any time of the year), or ones that cross inside the tree. You can cut low-growing branches so that you can walk under the tree, but don’t get all Lizzy Borden on it and prune everything all at once. You run the risk of mangling the tree by cutting too much out and ruining it’s appearance. Remember that trees grow slowly so it will not be able to spring back from hard pruning overnight. Pruning should be used to encourage the trees natural shape and growth habit.

Go to hgic.clemson.edu and click on the Landscape, Garden and Indoor Plants link then scroll down to #1003 for complete information on pruning trees, including the best way to prune large branches and the right tools to use.

tree work birmingham Determining how to save Penn State’s elm trees is an ongoing collaboration between University researchers and groundskeepers. Capturing disease-carrying insects to study them has been an elusive task, but researchers believe existing efforts to prevent Dutch elm disease may be a clue to keeping the landmark trees safe from elm yellows.
